Q. How does the challenge tie into the SIFE Competition?
A. Campbell’s Let’s Can Hunger Challenge directly relates to the triple bottom line, which accounts for social, economical and environmental factors. Hunger is a prevalent social issue. Teams are encouraged to apply a business mindset to the project process of providing urgent hunger relief, creating a marketing plan to raise awareness that compels communities to action and results in the outcome of food or funds donated. Students should use an entrepreneurial approach in developing and delivering projects. By providing urgent hunger relief, SIFE students are helping to improve the quality of life for millions of people in need. By empowering those in the cycle of hunger with knowledge, tools and resources, SIFE teams help those in need to raise their standard of living and reengage in society as a producer rather than a consumer.
Q. Does our SIFE team have to participate in all three objectives?
A. Yes. SIFE has seen tremendous growth in team project outputs and outcomes over the course of the Campbell’s Let’s Can Hunger Challenge. Therefore, teams are challenged to commit to comprehensively addressing hunger by completing all three objectives of the Challenge: Hunger Awareness, Urgent Hunger Relief and Lasting Hunger Relief.
Q. Can our SIFE team direct its focus to a country other than our own?
A. Yes. For example, a team could generate an outreach in their own community to raise food or funds for another country, or work with another country to break the cycle of hunger, etc. The team is subject to the same competition rules and must still meet all of the same criteria for the challenge. Neither Campbell nor SIFE are responsible or liable for logistics, including transport and shipping costs. Should your team wish to pursue this option, please be mindful of the laws and regulations surrounding shipping and logistics for your target country.
Q. Is this a global competition?
A. No. SIFE Teams will compete only at the national level and not at the global level.
Q. USA and Canada Teams: Do we have to compete at a Regional Competition to be eligible to participate?
A. No. However, all teams participating in the Campbell’s Let’s Can Hunger Challenge are strongly encouraged to compete, as the challenge is an excellent fit with the current SIFE criterion.
Q. Does my team have to register to participate?
A. Yes. All teams must register by 28 October 2011, 11:59 PM in the appropriate time zone in each respective country. Time zones are as follows:
Mexico: CDT
USA: CST
Teams in Mexico and the USA also commit to submitting periodic Activity Tracking Reports. These dates are listed under Activity Tracking Reports.
Q. What resources are available to help us with our projects?
A. See the “Resources”, “Ideas” and “Links” pages for helpful materials and tips. Feel free to also peruse project stories and videos from some of last year’s winners and entrants, also available through the www.letscanhunger.com site. Additionally, our blog allows teams to connect with one another to share ideas and give feedback. Teams can also share updates, project stories, pictures, etc. by becoming a Facebook fan of their SIFE Country and following their SIFE Country on twitter, YouTube, Flickr, etc. Please use the hashtag #SIFELCH when tweeting about your Campbell’s Let’s Can Hunger activities.
Q. What do we do with the food or funds that we raise?
A. Teams may donate food and/or funds to whatever beneficiary they choose. This may be a local pantry, religious organization, national or local non-profit.
Q. How do I validate the food or funds my team has collected and donated?
A. Please obtain a receipt from the organization to which you are donating. If the organization does not have a formal receipt process, please obtain proof of your team’s donation in writing or electronic communication. Should SIFE request it at any time, a team is required to provide proof of the number of items/pounds or dollars collected. This is especially true in the case of donations exceeding 5,000 lbs.
Total poundage shall be determined from a 1:1:1 ratio from items to pounds to dollars. For an item to count as “1”, it must weigh 10 oz. or more (the weight of a standard can). In the case of a mass quantity of items weighing less than 10 oz. (i.e. Ramen Noodles), the poundage of the items shall be counted rather than the number of items. A dollar shall count as 1 lb. 13 pesos shall count as 1 USD.
Q. What’s the deadline for the Final Impact Report?
A. The deadline for the Final Impact Report is 11:59 PM on the date specified for each respective country:
USA: 16 April, 2012, CDT
Mexico: 7 May, 2012, CDT
Q. What does the Final Impact Report entail?
A. The Final Impact Report is a series of questions concerning the outcomes of your team’s Campbell’s Let’s Can Hunger Challenge. Questions will include media attention generated, amount of items/pounds/funds raised, number of drives and number of people empowered to defeat the hunger cycle. Teams will use a 3-5 minute video to creatively relate their project narrative, including concept, execution, outputs and outcomes for the panel of Campbell employees conducting the judging.
Q. Can we register or submit a Final Impact Report before the deadline?
A. Absolutely! As soon as the forms are available online, a team may submit. However, remember that the competition runs until the deadline for that country and other teams against which you are competing may still be collecting food or funds up until the deadline.
Q. Can we work with a Campbell Soup Company representative to do this project?
A. Yes. Please notify SIFE staff, who will help connect you to a Campbell volunteer in your area if one is available. In the past, Campbell employees have served in a variety of capacities, from helping teams to secure Campbell advertising materials to promoting drives and activities, to connecting teams with wholesalers in the field, to attending events, serving as BAB members or providing guidance or feedback in person or over the phone. The time and commitment your Campbell volunteer is able to make will determine the nature of your relationship. Please be respectful of their availability and time, as their involvement is on a volunteer basis above and beyond their daily responsibilities.
Q. Do monies awarded have to be used for the Campbell’s Let’s Can Hunger Challenge?
A. No. However, teams are strongly encouraged to use the funds to wisely reinvest in their project, increasing their results and sustainability.
Q. Are we required to only collect Campbell nonperishable items?
A. No. As Campbell is the sponsor of the Campbell’s Let’s Can Hunger Challenge, teams are encouraged to collect Campbell products. However, all nonperishable products edible for human consumption will be recognized in the team’s total collection without distinction.
Q. Does expired food count for the overall poundage collected?
A. The rules on donating food vary by state and country. Check with your local food bank for a list of ineligible items. Items that are listed as ineligible by your local beneficiary may not be included in your total poundage collected.
